Review of SLHost Web Hosting | Web Hosting Articles

I first signed up for a VPS with SLHost in February 2007 based on the special they posted on this site and the reviews of other members of this site provided. The service that I received for that site was exemplary. I didn’t have any issues with outages, my site members experienced “blazing” speeds, and things went very well.

I have a second site that I serve as an administrator on, and when we had need for shared web hosting the other members of the 2nd site agreed that based on my positive experience with SLHost that we should purchase hosting with them. This was in July 2007.

From the point of purchase, the site began having outages on a regular basis. The hosting was for a small message board (<60 active members), and rarely did we ever have everyone online at once, but the silver plan seemed to tax the hosting resources. From July to November I received over 50 messages that my message board software was unable to connect to the server, something that was not the norm for my site. We had had service with another host before we moved to SLHost that offered lower bandwidth, lower disk space, etc but had greater “uptime.” The outages reached the point where my coadministrators agreed that we should move to a VPS.

In November we asked to upgrade from shared hosting to a VPS, erroneously assuming that SLHost would coordinate the move with us so that we could least inconvenience our members. Instead, the move happened before we even received an email with the login details for the VPS.

A premature move wouldn’t be a huge deal, except that the site has never worked properly since. At any given time, half of the site members could not access the forums and would receive a page 404 error. We were told that it was a domain registrar issue, and even went so far as to move the domain registration from Hostway to Dotster, but the problem continued.

We have submitted multiple trouble tickets on this issue, and as of today still do not have resolution. The techs do not read the previous history for our account even though we have asked them to on multiple occasions, and because of this we keep being asked to do things we already have, told that the problem is resolved when it isn’t, told it is someone else’s fault, told that a setting has been adjusted and to wait another 24-48 hours, etc.

Because we have VPS hosting, we purchased a new domain name which works okay (.com) but our initial site (.org) is still hit and miss, 4 months later. I’m tired of the lack of response, tired of the lack of follow through that the SLHost techs show, and tired of their lack of ability to read about the ongoing issues, even when I paste EVERYTHING into an email. I thoroughly regret recommending SLHost to my 2nd site.

The first site’s VPS is still working as promised. If someone is technically advanced enough to not need SLHost to manage their VPS (there is someone on the 1st site who is who I turned the site over to in its entirety a few months ago), then I think that it is a great choice. But if someone is not technically savvy enough to be able to troubleshoot problems stemming from SLHost moving the site from shared hosting to a VPS, there are services other places that I believe will be a better fit for them.

Our 6 months of VPS with SLHost expire in May. At that time, we will be moving to another host with better customer service, preferably one that doesn’t make us make the same explanations for four months without resolving the issue.

Hi everyone,

First off, thanks to all you folks at Web Hosting Talk forums for helping me in taking the fist step towards an online presence. The inputs of members on WHT have been not only helpful but also educating and informative.
Would like to specially thank Jedito and Aussie Bob for their time and assistance as well.

I have now decided to go for Shared Hosting with Crucial Paradigm.

Ijan who goes by the nickname CrucialP has been very kind and has given a huge discount for the first year, considering this is for a uni project. He has patiently replied to all my queries that I have been bombarding him with. Ranging from the real silly ones, right to the technical queries that deal with the uni project.

Most of the questions were, more because I am new to this and apprehensive in taking the next step, which is, choosing the “right” host.

What was surprising, besides the huge discount that brought a big smile on my face, was that once I registered on the Crucial Paradigm website (which was last evening at 5:30pm), they already set up my account and sent me details/password/access etc. before I even made the payment.

Since I already had a domain name registered with Answerable, I made the Name Server changes this morning. I instantly got my splash page up and running.

I thought this would take anywhere between 24 – 48 hours so was surprised to see it happen instantly.

So far, it’s been great dealing with Crucial Paradigm. Thanks Ijan/CrucialP.

I hope to keep posting here in between uni assignments and tinkering with websites to see how this goes further.

Once again thanks all.

So many people here at WHT have written reviews of hosts that I’ve read and have used as a guide to making better hosting decisions, I decided that it’s time for me to contribute to the community. My review is more a rambling, sorry.

I signed up with Steadcom on November 12, 2007. I obtained one of their higher end VPS packages, which they further customized for me.

They were great through the sign-up and configuration: They removed the control panel, which was part of the offer, and discounted the difference back to me. There was a snafu with the recurring billing through PayPal. They canceled the subscription and didn’t affect my service - most hosts have their billing so screwed up that any refunds kill the service. They refunded me the difference and everything was good.

I had a few reasons to contact support over the past 4 months (in order of occurrence) :

- The billing issue I mentioned above - Resolved, no complaints.

- Seemingly low throughput - Resolved, no complaints.

- Couldn’t get apache to respond - I figured out that the server node runs apache that responds if my own apache is not running, which was screwing me up - Resolved, no complaints.

- Obtain my 2nd promised IP address - I had to open two tickets because the first sat open for hours without response. The second ticket was turned around quickly. Resolved, a little slower than expected.

- Server was unresponsive - My own configuration error in httpd.conf - Steadcom support was stellar. In fact they were aware of the issue by the time I contacted them and had already began troubleshooting the issue and allocating more resources to my server to see if that would help. Resolved, no complaints.

- Low throughput (again) - Went from great throughput (~5MB/s) to ~380KB/s from multiple locations, even downloading from Amazon S3 and dotMac. Lots of troubleshooting, I think a lot of effort and communication, but we were unable to resolve the issue. Support was at first able to resolve an issue where we were stuck at 115KB/s, but we couldn’t break the 400KB/s barrier. Unresolved, now only getting responses of “it’s not our end”.

- HyperVM backups disabled - I used to be able to perform backups in HyperVM and store at least two prior backups without an issue. Something changed and I could no longer perform HyperVM backups. Being told that they’re in talks with LxLabs to enable the feature and not overuse client’s space. Unresolved, still unclear what changed and why.

As anyone on this forum would do after having issues that are not resolved to their satisfaction, I went around and did some competitive comparisons. I think there are some good offerings from other folks (vpslink, serverpoint, wdservers, tektonic, zipservers) that would serve my needs.

However, I decided not to make a switch (yet?). Why? Great support response times. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to use names in these forums, but the support guys respond to my tickets and emails within minutes pretty much all day and night. To me, that is such an important “feature”.

Their support is also a pretty savvy group of folks. While most places discount customers’ experiences and assume the customer doesn’t know what they’re doing on their server, Steadcom support knows that I do know what I’m doing (most of the time) and treat me appropriately.

So, for right now, Steadcom remains my host. However, I have lost a bit of faith and enthusiasm regarding their platforms. I think their people are top notch, I just hope they can implement some change management so customers aren’t seeing issues and bringing them up to support.

All that said, if I have one more unresolved issue… I would be hard-pressed to justify the time and pain to stay with Steadcom. Also, if we can’t resolve the throughput issue, that may cause me to stray to an alternate host.

I hope this information and these opinions helps somebody make their own decision about hosting.

Remember: There are two sides to every story. Everything above is just my side.

Six months ago i was checking out some of the hosting forums to find a new host for my website. I had just spent 2 years with a name brand VPS hosting company whose support and service had become pretty bad. So I started looking around.

After a couple of false starts and some misdirection by another VPS provider, I found Iron Mountain hosting.

First, I should say that I’m not a reseller but have about 25 of my own websites. And I develop a new one from time to time .. and take one down from time to time.

For the record, one of my sites is asia-gems.com

I signed up for Iron Mountain’s fully managed Diamond plan for what sounded like a pretty fair deal, especially with more than double the RAM I had previously. Another thing I traded in was that bloody CPanel .. in favor of Webmin .. which, it turns out, I seldom need.

During these past 6 months I can recall a few issues that resulted in some downtime. The worst one involved about 24 hours .. I believe it was a kernel problem. All but 1 were reported or warned about ahead of time .. and that 1 involved replacing a battery on a backup generator, I believe. So they haven’t been 100%, but they haven’t broken my back either.

What they have given me is better service and support that I thought possible in this industry.

Tickets get answered fast .. seldom even an hour.
Support has written a couple of scripts for me so I can connect to my mySQL databases without changing any of the page code.
Support has installed various 3rd party software for me .. on the VPS server .. and they have offered to install other scripts.
I have a problem with my ISP shaping international bandwidth for certain ports. No problem. Support has droped tables for me, set up new accounts, CHOWNed accounts .. actually, anything I have asked them to do.

But the good part, they act like they enjoy making me happy. So they are either really great foks .. or darn good actors. It has been a real pleasure associating with them.

Iron Mountain may not be the best in the industry, but they are way ahead of whoever is in second place.
